I see from the article that these are "implicit" subsidies, not direct subsidies, brought about by externalized costs like pollution-related health problems. These external costs ought to be borne by their creators (the fossil fuel companies) rather than being socialized and paid for by everyone. Externalizing costs distorts the market, and the true costs of fossil fuels are hidden from the public in the form of excess deaths, healthcare costs, environmental cleanup costs, and more.
